Bright Futures Foundation Overview PDF Print E-mail
The Bright Futures Foundation was organized in January 2008 with a pledge to support students of talent and financial need through higher education and into the workforce.  Chaired by Omaha philanthropist Walter Scott, the Board of Directors hired Dr. Ken Bird, former Westside Community Schools Superintendent, as the Chief Executive Officer.  Bird began his work in June 2008.

The Avenue Scholars program began serving students in January 2009 in a partnership with Urban League of Omaha to secure college admission and financial aid for graduating high school seniors.  Selection of the first group of college-bound students also began in January, as did identification of sophomores and juniors in three area high schools.

The five-year plan calls for direct support to students in 15 Douglas and Sarpy County High Schools; support to students in public and private higher education institutions; and support to graduates into the workforce.
